About Chilika Lake

Chilika Lake, straddling the districts of Puri, Khurda, and Ganjam in Odisha, is a natural wonder of immense ecological importance. As Asia's largest brackish water lagoon, this pear-shaped lake is a vast expanse of water separated from the Bay of Bengal by a narrow sandy ridge. The lake's ecosystem is a dynamic mix of freshwater from rivers and saltwater from the sea, creating a unique habitat that supports an incredible diversity of life. Chilika is most famous as a paradise for bird watchers. During the winter, it becomes one of the world's most significant migratory bird havens, attracting hundreds of species from as far as the Caspian Sea, Siberia, and Central Asia. The Nalabana Bird Sanctuary, a core area of the lagoon, transforms into a vibrant avian spectacle. Boating through the lake is the best way to experience its serene beauty and spot its diverse fauna. The lake is also home to a significant population of Irrawaddy dolphins, which can often be seen frolicking in the outer channels. Numerous small islands dot the lake, each with its own character, such as the Kalijai Island with its temple dedicated to the Goddess Kalijai. The local communities depend on the lake for their livelihood, primarily through fishing, and their traditional fishing techniques are a sight to behold. Chilika Lake offers a peaceful and immersive natural escape, showcasing the delicate balance between nature and humanity.
